Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.
Other Medical Problems
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of carisoprodol. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:
- Drug abuse or dependence, or history of—Use with caution. Dependence on carisoprodol may develop.
- Kidney disease or
- Liver disease—Use with caution. The effects may be increased because of slower removal of the medicine from the body.
- Porphyria (an enzyme problem), history of—Should not be used in patients with this condition.
- Seizures—Use with caution. May make this condition worse.
You should not take carisoprodol if you:
- Are allergic to carisoprodol, Soma, or any of the inactive components used to make the medication. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients. Also, you should not take carisoprodol if you are allergic to carbamate medications such as meprobamate (Miltown®).
- Have acute intermittent porphyria.

Before taking carisoprodol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to meprobamate, tybamate, or mebutamate; or if you have any other allergies. Also tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual reaction to carisoprodol or any of the medications listed above.
This medication should not be used if you have a certain medical condition. Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have: acute intermittent porphyria.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems, history of regular alcohol/drug abuse, asthma, seizure disorder.
To reduce dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position.
This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving, swimming or using machinery. Avoid alcoholic beverages.
This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It may rarely harm an unborn baby. Consult your doctor for more details and to discuss reliable forms of birth control. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, tell your doctor immediately.
This medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits to make sure carisoprodol is working properly and to check for unwanted effects.
carisoprodol may cause some people to become dizzy, drowsy, or less alert than they are normally. Avoid driving, using machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.
carisoprodol will add to the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants (medicines that make you drowsy or less alert). Some examples of CNS depressants are antihistamines or medicine for hay fever, allergies, or colds; sedatives, tranquilizers, or sleeping medicine; prescription pain medicine or narcotics; medicine for seizures or barbiturates; or anesthetics, including some dental anesthetics. Check with your medical doctor or dentist before taking any of the above while you are taking carisoprodol.
Do not stop using carisoprodol suddenly without first asking your doctor. You may need to slowly decrease your dose before stopping it completely.
If your condition does not improve within two to three weeks, or if it becomes worse, check with your doctor.
Do not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor. This includes prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements.
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Your healthcare professionals (e.g., doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: melatonin, other muscle relaxants (e.g., cyclobenzaprine, methocarbamol).
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), medicine for sleep (e.g., zolpidem, temazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medications (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine or tricyclics such as amitriptyline), tranquilizers. Alcoholic beverages will also increase the drowsiness effect.
Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An “AB” rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All generic carisoprodol tablets currently available have an “AB” rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Soma.

Soma® (carisoprodol) is a muscle relaxant that is available by prescription only. Because Soma is not a controlled substance, many people assume that it has no potential for abuse. However, Soma is actually a commonly abused medication. Many healthcare providers believe that Soma should be reclassified to be a controlled substance, which would put it under the regulation of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The Chemical Basis for Soma Abuse
Soma itself is probably not addicting. However, the liver metabolizes Soma into meprobamate, a different medication. Meprobamate has significant anti-
anxiety properties and is a controlled substance with the potential to be abused. Theoretically, it is possible that people whose livers are more efficient at metabolizing Soma into meprobamate may be more likely to abuse Soma.
Soma is approved only for short-term use (for a maximum of two or three weeks). Taking it for longer periods of time could increase the risk of dependence and possibly abuse. More importantly, people with a tendency towards alcohol or drug abuse are at a high risk for abusing Soma. Therefore, Soma is not a good choice for people with such problems. Other muscle relaxants with no abuse potential would be much more appropriate. Soma abuse is also more likely when people take Soma together with alcohol or other medications with abuse potential. Avoiding alcohol or addicting medications may help limit Soma abuse.
Because
Soma is not a controlled substance, people sometimes think that it will be easier to get a prescription for Soma, compared to other potentially addicting medications (such as narcotics). However, most healthcare providers are quite familiar with the problems associated with Soma. Most healthcare providers react to a request for Soma just as they would react for a request for a controlled substance (usually with caution and sometimes suspicion).
In the postmarketing experience with SOMA, cases of dependence, withdrawal, and abuse have been reported with prolonged use. Most cases of dependence, withdrawal, and abuse occurred in patients who have had a history of addiction or who used SOMA in combination with other drugs with abuse potential. However, there have been post-marketing adverse event reports of SOMA-associated abuse when used without other drugs with abuse potential. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported following abrupt cessation after prolonged use. To reduce the chance of SOMA dependence, withdrawal, or abuse, SOMA should be used with caution in addiction-prone patients and in patients taking other CNS depressants including alcohol, and SOMA should not be used more than two to three weeks for the relief of acute musculoskeletal discomfort.

Nonclinical Toxicology
Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility
Long term studies in animals have not been performed to evaluate the carcinogenic potential of carisoprodol.
SOMA was not formally evaluated for genotoxicity. In published studies, carisoprodol was mutagenic in the in vitro mouse lymphoma cell assay in the absence of metabolizing enzymes, but was not mutagenic in the presence of metabolizing enzymes. Carisoprodol was clastogenic in the in vitro chromosomal aberration assay using Chinese hamster ovary cells with or without the presence of metabolizing enzymes. Other types of genotoxic tests resulted in negative findings. Carisoprodol was not mutagenic in the Ames reverse mutation assay using S. typhimurium strains with or without metabolizing enzymes, and was not clastogenic in an in vivo mouse micronucleus assay of circulating blood cells.
SOMA was not formally evaluated for effects on fertility. Published reproductive studies of carisoprodol in mice found no alteration in fertility although an alteration in reproductive cycles characterized by a greater time spent in estrus was observed at a carisoprodol dose of 1200 mg/kg/day. In a 13-week toxicology study that did not determine fertility, mouse testes weight and sperm motility were reduced at a dose of 1200 mg/kg/day. In both studies, the no effect level was 750 mg/kg/day, corresponding to approximately 2.6 times the human equivalent dosage of 350 mg four times a day, based on a body surface area comparison. The significance of these findings for human fertility is not known.
